This was a really fun project to work on. As a lead designer, the challenge was we had an intranet site that passed through a lot of different hands with little governance. The site ended up with a very disorganized and confusing IA, which, between my colleague and I, took us 2 whole weeks just to map out the IA. This was causing a large amount of inefficiencies, and wasn’t optimized towards any specific type of user. There were well over 90 data points on the homepage alone, and it was a really confusing mess.
The process to get through this and come up with the final product included observation sessions with target users to clearly define a persona. There were a lot of whiteboarding sessions, timed sketching exercises, and low to mid-fidelity iterations. The design team conducts a lot of what we call DLUR’s (designer-led user research), which helped guide us to make some pretty custom components to the site which are really geared towards our primary persona. This project is scheduled to launch by late Q4 2017 / early Q1 2018.
